The approach :

Conservation is understanding :

Stone and mortar generate a bewildering array of problems. Many entail complex ethical difficulties. Some have no practical solutions.  But many can be addressed by applying the lessons drawn from national practical experience. Contracting has given me personal experience and academia has enabled me to share the experience of others.

My reports are comprehensive, but also readable and direct. There is no jargon, and no infuriating reference to the need to ‘obtain further reports’.

Conservation is probably less about doing anything spectacularly clever, than about avoiding doing anything stupid. Good communication is the best way to avoid stupid mistakes.

I approach stone, mortar and related problems from a holistic point of view :

- I understand the theoretical decay processes that drive visible

  problems

- I have considerable experience in relating specific decay

  problems to their wider environment

- I have personal experience of current and historic conservation

  techniques

- I am familiar with the opportunities and constraints offered by all

the institutions involved in UK heritage management.

Conservation is adopting the right approach :

Conservation is communication :
