Art, philosophy, cleaning and weathering :

My time at Wells was fascinating. I was pitched into the deep end of ‘mystic conservation’, where artistic outcomes were reverenced, but basic understanding of materials and processes was not highly regarded. This was highly beneficial for me. It  forced me to justify, to myself, what I was doing. Some aspects of the work stood up to critical analysis well, others less so.

The lessons I learned at Wells are particularly relevant to :

- weathering and decay

- repair techniques

- consolidation

- cleaning

Wells also gave a fiery baptism into the philosophy of conservation. Illustrated here is the figure of Christ in Majesty, with a symbolic angel to either side. Should they be there? My experience  can help guide specifiers through the arguments over repair versus restoration.
