Monuments : the world in miniature :

A substantial proportion of my contracting  work involved the repair of large church monuments.

Monuments are fascinating because their conservation requires a particularly diverse skill base. Stone structures such as the deBrien tomb are really composites, where every joint is reinforced with an iron dowel. To further complicate conservation, iron dowels and cramps were often set in hot-poured lead. The heat from this grouting process often damaged the surrounding stone without providing effective corrosion prevention.

As well as knowledge of the properties of common and exotic stones, large monuments also demand understanding of damp, salts and the behaviour of adhesives, timber, ceramics and metals. The problems of larger structures are all present in major monuments, they are just concentrated into smaller spaces.
